Which cultural differences should you understand for a successful career in the Netherlands? This a question I often receive in my role as an expat career coach. Being Dutch, it’s not easy to explain in just one sentence. Below, I’ll share some topics that expats often struggle with. I’ll also highlight some important differences in networking and job application approaches that can make a real difference. I hope this helps you.
1) Directness
Generally speaking, the Dutch are more direct than many other cultures. Don’t be surprised by a clear answer—it’s usually not an attack or a sign of disrespect. It’s simply how we communicate.
2) Hierarchy
In general, you can say that the hierarchy in the Netherlands is less pronounced compared to other countries. However, don’t be mistaken: there is still hierarchy, just more subtle. Even when there’s talk of an “open-door policy,” it’s important to be aware of the actual (informal) hierarchy. Tact and insight information are crucial.
3) Equality
Think of it as making a call before you apply, or during a job interview. In the Netherlands, you’re usually given plenty of space to answer and ask questions.
Do it! Ask: What are you really looking for? Which skills should I excel at? What are the most exciting aspects of the job and what is challenging? Why do you like working here?
This is crucial information that helps you share convincing and relevant details about yourself. Of course, keep it balanced and tactful. Be sure to speak about your real motivation, skills and your experience.
4) Picture on your cv (and LinkedIn profile)
Yes, do it! Not in the US, but definitely in the Netherlands. A professional, approachable picture with a solid yet friendly appearance. Avoid being overly formal, distant, or posing like you’re unreal.
Show yourself in a professional and engaging way. Pictures communicate 1000 times faster, better, and longer than written text.
